Frank Land (1943-47) - known
as Frank Landsberger at school
I left Willesden County in 1947, got a place
at the London School of Economics, and graduated in 1950. After a stint as a
research assistant in the Economics Research Division, where I met a fellow
researcher Ailsa, whom I subsequently married, I joined J. Lyons as an accounts
clerk.
Ailsa remained at the LSE until she retired as Emeritus Professor of Operational
Research. I was lucky enough to be recruited into the new
computer venture LEO (Lyons Electronic Office), which pioneered Business
Computing.
After 16 years with Lyons, I was invited back to the LSE to set up teaching and
research into what was then called systems analysis. Apart from a 5 year period
at the London Business School, I stayed at the LSE until retirement as Emeritus
Professor in the Department of Information Systems.
Ailsa and I have three children (all now approaching middle age) and seven
grandchildren. Since leaving London after we retired we live in Devon in
Dartmoor National Park in an old manor house (Tudor and mainly Georgian) divided
into 6 separate dwellings. We live in the Tudor bit, spend our time on
gardening, Dartmoor, grandchildren, local affairs and a certain amount of LSE
research. A busy and contented life!
